It's possible that you mean longer FRONT hubs but it's not clear.
Why would mounting the wheels on longer (rear) hubs, which by definition MUST be mounted further IN on the axle than standard hubs [if you use the same wheel-offset] if you want to remain within the max/min-width rules, AUTOMATICALLY give you MORE grip in the wet than standard hubs?
The tyres themselves can be in EXACTLY the same place (in relationship to the track and the rest of the kart) using EITHER type of rear hub so long as there is enough 'room' on the axle or if you change the wheel offset at the same time.
Long hubs would LET you run your CURRENT rear wheels further out (if the rules allow) but that seems to be the reverse of what you are trying to do.
The wide REAR hubs COULD make a difference but I can only see that happening if they give you a different amount of 'flex' than the current set-up does. In that case, wouldn't we need to know the relative current stiffness of your axle and the relative stiffness of the 'new wheels/hubs' to be able to give a definitive answer? Simply changing to different stiffness WHEELS might give the same effect!
Long hubs at the FRONT MAY give you better 'turn in grip' because they will allow the weight to come off your inner-rear-wheel. They won't help rear-grip that much, though, as you will be 'off lock' when in 'mid-corner'.
I understand your reluctance to BUY more wheels/hubs unless you feel confident that they will help you; that's common sense. NJB feels that they will ALWAYS be an advantage, I cannot be so sure of that as him.
The cheap solution would be to do a deal with a friend who already HAS long hubs (and 'matching' wheels if required) and borrow those. Sadly, that leaves you with the old 'test, test, test'.
Personally, I'd try ANYTHING to see if it helps..... especially if you can borrow for free!
