I am with you, Chad! I simply do NOT believe the statement about Mags! It depends on the WHEELS!
I had sets WAY back in the 1980s which (in certain conditions) produced MORE grip than the same tyre mounted on a spun alloy and less than on a CAST alloy set!
That's one of the reasons that I simply do NOT believe it's simply an effect of the MATERIAL and nor do I beleivfe it's just the 'temperature' abilities. Whatever the effect is, it's compounded (confused) by the ARCHITECTURE of the rim!
I have a STRONG suspicion that the Mags were STIFFER than the other two types. They appeared to be made of MORE material (thicker walls, etc. and more 'buttressing' but weighed less.....
... they also leaked like SIEVES and could be seen bubbling thorugh the WALLS on wet days... until I 'varnished' the inner walls!
I've just looked... and I still HAVE a set of them.... but I haven't used them for 20 years! I was always a bit scared of using them as they seemed to be MUCH more prone to chipping than the cast Alloys and VASTLY more likely to chip than the Spun alloys!
