Brian Simon, I actually think "Foolish for not checking the carb" may be the answer here.
As a point of fact The scrutineers were informed over a monthprior to the Final that the spring tolerance was changed from the 0.2mm. This I understand was because there was a batch a springs supplied slightly short. This is not a performance enhancing difference. Lengthening the spring is.
Did you buy it from another competitor Brian. Or did you buy the spring from a track shop? I know of one that supplies them in varying lengths and thicknesses. I buy springs direct from Tabor usually in packets of 10, it is possible to check the length using a ruler or even a metal tape. The tolerance zone is the thickness of a hacksaw blade. A damaged one is easily identified.
I have competed in Blue for some considerable time and my carb spring has been checked several times and always if I have been in the front 3. (thats not often I know) I know of a family team that changed both their carb springs before the Final just to be sure. As I understand it, The Junior who you thought was non compliant was found to be compliant when the checks were done in Weymouth. I "suspect" the wrong tolerance was applied by the local scrutineer.
I was unable to contact Brian last night due to where I live but will ring today.
Cheers Steve
