Interesting, in France all the karting businesses sell 25mm solid axles in four grades:
A - Standard (Medium) C - Hard B - Soft BB - Extra soft
http://www.itaka.fr/gb/various-chassis-parts/axles/full-axle,PC0272.D.html (Look at the prices and weep for us!)
However, because the chassis size is so inappropriate some people are spending big bucks on triple B axles which is extra extra soft. Along with up to 1000 on custom made extra long magnesium hubs that do not make contact with the axle except at the pinch bolts.
I really hope that the theory that there is no difference is true. Nobody test here but they just copy each other, so it could well be.
A second hand, Cadet size, kart I bought here turned out to have a stainless axle in it, I only noticed when I realised it wasn't going rusty and put a magnet on it. It was definately faster, but once I knew I had to remove it.
