1) How strange...... when I look at Leatt's site it ONLY Lists the South African bodies!
see for yourself!
http://www.leatt-brace.com/index.php?page_id=15&msg_id=57&id=3#57
2) the 'give-away' in THIS part is your caveat "other than as a marketing tool". Please tell me of ANY safety device which uses marketing at ALL that DOESN'T do safety check FOR MARKETING PURPOSES! Why hasn't the neck-brace-industry gone to SNELL (or similar) to get the SAME level of 'independent checking' as the HELMET industry?
3) Yup..... the bikers are SO impressed by the Leatt (et. al.) that they haven't agreed that, if they ALL had to wear one, there'd BE no disadvatage of increasing the drag.... Perhaps you'll note that the Hans ALSO increases drag in ALL F1 cars.... until the CAR designers worked on the problem to REDUCE the effect!
4) The PROOF that helmets WORK is so damned simple, it's a JOKE! But I'll give a you a BRUTAL proof! My wife is in Neurosurgical research. At ANY meeting of 'transplant surgeons' you'll hear them be-moaning the use of CRASH HELMETS! Why..... because they have LOST a regular (and plentiful!) supply of body parts from basically FIT and HEALTHY young men that they USED to get from brain-dead MOTOR CYCLIST!
The REDUCTION of numbers of serious head injuries from Motor Cyclist EXACTLY paralleled the adoption and improvements in helmet design! Check the Neurosurgical scientific papers for the figures!
But you STILL miss the POINT!
I am NOT saying, and I have NEVER said, that neck braces that are AS GOOD as the Leatt and the Valhalla COULD NOT make the karter SAFER! However, the:
* Lack of independent proof * Lack of independent testing * Lack of approval by the 'authorities' * Low amount of use in ANY other class of ROAD racing
.... make me LESS sure than I would like to be that they ARE the 'great invention' that we are TOLD!
Secondly, every ONE of the claims made for the 300 Leatt/Valhalla type brace is STILL being made (By Sparco, America) for the 27 FOAM type! The foam ones SEEM less well designed to a casual observer (i.e., ME) and yet they can STILL claim EXACTLY the same 'benefits'. How am I SUPPOSED to recognise the differences between the types when the CLAIMS don't differentiate??? At the moment, it's ONLY 'your word' that TELLS me that they are better..... and.... as you shouldn't trust MY advice on safety features, I don't think I am willing to accept YOUR advice on the subect, EITHER!
So.... when there IS some form of proof, testing, or approval BY our motor racing authorities for ANY of these designs, I'll be DELIGHTED to support and PROMOTE these items. However, UNTIL they do.... I will not HESITATE to make the point that we do NOT have any MSA (UK) approval of these devices!
Christ, I hope they DO get approved because, if they are SHOWN to reduce injuries, I'll be signing their praises FROM THE ROOF TOPS!
