Surely one uses sound ranging? "clunk" means too close, silence means too far. "Vrrrr" means on the track "Squiissshhh" means off it.
Couple that with the "Strictly .....g" method of driving, "One Two three, One two three, Turn right, One two three Turn half left" which mostly works for me. If in doubt, turn right as there are more right turns than left on most tracks.
Finally use the sphincter control for braking; as the sphincter opens, the left foot goes down. If you are a little late, the kart will be brown anyway.
Since shutting your eyes really helps with the concentration, one can't see lights anyway.
