NEVER buy a second hand helmet, if its even been dropped once by a careless child and the outer shell isnt cracked the inside could be mashed up badly.
i saw something quite scary a few years ago, we were doing marshals training, Arai bought along some helmets, 2 brand new, one that had been in a major crash but didnt look damaged. on purpose they just dropped one on a concrete floor, then cut open all 3 helmets to show you what impact there was inside, the new one, obviously looked ok, but you could hardly tell any difference between the one which was dropped on the floor and the one that had been in a 100mph impact when a formula ford rolled at brands hatch...
...moral of the story, you dont know a helmets history and even if its had the slightest knock it could put your kids life in danger!
buy a new helmet instead of a new set of tyres, yeh your son might not be as quick but he will be safe and thats the most important thing!
