Considering they can be used for weighing cattle they are very robust.
They don't have springs but strain gauges which vary in resistance as they are deflected.
They can weigh very heavy objects accurately but are sensitive to temperature so bear that in mind if the temperature changes during the day if you run close to the wind on your weight.
The deflection is very small so you won't damage them by driving on and off them but you could damage the platform that they are attached to.
Most kart scales have four strain gauges, two on each 'bar' and the four inputs are fed into the head unit on two cables and added together.
Bad wiring can cause variations and even a high wind through the building will exert a pressure on the platform and give a false reading.
