My lad is pretty much the same age as yours, in his first season and racing JTKM. I've discovered the father/son relationship when racing is a complex one. I've always thought I didn't put pressure on my lad. I've told him countless times I dont care where he finishes a race as long as he comes back in with a smile on his face. last thing I say to him as the green flag goes up is "have Fun". So there I am feeling condifdent (almost smug) that I'm not a pushy parent. Sunday at Rissy he finished well up the order in heat 3 and I was over the moon. As I arrived with trolley to collect kart he said something that really made me wonder just how I come across to him. His exact words were "nice to see you smiling for once". I'm guessing my take on how I interact with him versus what he takes from our discussions and my body language are somewhat divergent.
