Hi Alan - I went through the same thing about a year ago, I chose the Honda as it's a lot easier to start with for a mechanical novice like me who isn't running in a team and you don't have to worry about rebuild costs every 10hrs. Although once you get serious, you can soon get drawn into spending on quicker, better engines!
I bought a cheap old kart off fleabay to make sure he still wanted to do it, especially after a couple of accidents - when he still looked serious i then upgraded to a year old project one chassis.
Try and find a P1 if you can, majority of people seem to run these and they are relatively easy to setup - easier to compare your progress aganist others i have found.
I signed my son up for a cadet course at Thruxton (probably a bit far from you) which was a great intro and took him through all the basics.
Not sure what tracks are close to you, but can highly recommend a trip to Clay Pigeon nr Dorchester. 35/day and you get to drive as much as you like - Cadets only typically Mon-Thurs.
Good luck!
