Guys...... it's another one of those classics where people will tell you stuff that's blatantly RUBBISH..... when you THINK about it!
The differences between 40 and 50 are many..... so let's just pick ONE difference and look at that.... for the moment:-
If the 50mm axle is stiffer (it need NOT be, but just accept that assumption for the moment), then, if your 40mm was too floppy for your kart, then the stiffer4 50mm axle will make it better. However, if the 40mm was already TOO stiff, then the stiffer 50mm will make it WORSE!
It doesn't matter if 50mm turns out to be FLOPPIER than the 40 mm, the same logic still applies. You CANNOT just make broad statements about the effect of such changes being 'better' unless you know your starting conditions!
No matter WHAT the 50mm axle does to your handling, you need to know if it was already 'TOO XYZ' or 'NOT ENOUGH XYZ' before you can predict the effect!
This happens throughout karting on all manner of subjects but you STILL hear people say 'ABC is better' when you can see that NOBODY can KNOW that unless the know YOUR kart intimately!!
It's like asking, "will and additional 2psi rear tyre pressure make my kart handle better?". The answer is....:-
1) YES if your tyre pressure was 2psi or more too LOW 2) NO if your tyre pressure was perfect or too high!
Whenever you hear 'advice'..... weigh up if it's POSSIBLE for someone to KNOW the answer!
