'Rotax to develop a Super Max'. Heaven help us, just what are we doing here? Taking something complex and expensive and making it more complex and more expensive? Senior karting numbers are depleting alarmingly because of budgets that exceed club Formula Ford. And we're talking about making it even more elitist? At some point the powers that be are going to have to turn to the market and put out a simple output spec - how about:
Single cylinder 2 stroke kart engine. Unsealed but tight fiche. 75cc (ish?) Air cooled (no radiators, pumps, pulleys, seals, hoses, waterjackets, thermostats etc). Direct injection through mechanical pump (no electric pumps, no batteries, looms etc) Clutched (for H&S) but external starter (no TAG, starter motors, chargers, looms, multiplugs etc) Power band managed through open restriction from 12hp to 24hp to allow use from cadets at 13 years old through juniors and on. The technologies for all the above exist currently and are being used in various applications every day, I just can't believe Rotax - or any number of manufacturers for that matter - can't produce this. With the right mandate it would have longevity making it cheap - and it would address the environmental issue, which is never going to go away.
