I can only speak as I find. Having done cadets for 5 years and moved to Rotax I am very pleased we did.
We have two engines, one new, one second hand with pedigree and so far this year we have run for approx 30 hours. Neither engine has been back to our engine builder and we haven't noticed any drop off in performance. The engine is simply bullet proof.
I was somewhat nervous about the carb and jetting but I have found it really straight forward and not complicated at all.
There is no way I would want to go back to Tillotson type carbs and rebuilding them endlessly to keep them sweet.
I have no doubt there are special engines in Rotax that are maybe 2-3 1/10s quicker but that's inevitable with tuners at work and people prepared to pay for performance. It has ever been this way.
But overall the reason BRP now dominate world karting is quite clear - they provide a reliable, value for money product that is evenly matched.
Yes I want TKM to be successful and to continue as I believe it has it's place but the once dominate Italians are now just fighting over the scraps and they only have themselves to blame.
