If the Alfano has got very wet at any time, there could be some corrosion in the switches.
It is possible that when you press the buttons it doesn't give just one clear signal but a series of intermittent signals, and that confuses the chip that holds the settings.
Also try each battery terminal separately on the connector as you sometimes get one that is a bit loose but the connector feels tight when they're both connected.
I have cured weird faults by going through each of the menu stages and altering the setting and saving the result, doing a reset then going back and putting the right settings back in.
If you suspect water damage it's not too difficult to dismantle the Alfano and just look for any corrosion around the switches.
They are easy to replace with a small soldering iron and you can buy them on Ebay cheaply, just make sure you get the long ones.
