I didn't know the Paffetts did that but that's EXACTLY the method I used and have written about on this site for about 10 years. It's nice to know that professionals and total amateurs can come to the same conclusions.
My only concern was that, once I had set up the axle 'perfectly' (i.e., no 'strain' in the mounting), I then attached the seat and re-checked the axle..... and it was under tension again. The closing (or opening) of the seat mountings were enough to twist the chassis enough to re-tighten the axle's movement. I then thought, if something THAT low stress (fitting a seat) can deflect the chassis sufficiently, what the hell happens when the kart is fully loaded in the middle of a corner? I thus became a little less obsessive about axle mounting.
