I have been thinking about this far too much I think. The steering column we have fitted at the moment isn't the original one. The best fitting one in terms of yoke height and the hole positions got a bit bent and was replaced. I've set the kart up with very little camber and no toe to try and help the little Honda engine out as much as possible and realised that if anything near full lock was applied it would probably grind to a halt. I think you are right and it's just down to the design. The only clever thing I could come up with was that if this much lock was needed the steering would be trying it's hardest to lift the rear wheel, and the slight decrease in lock on the outer wheel might help it gain grip rather then just slide. Gives me something to think about anyway.
