Dear Michael, My two boys, 10 and 12 have just started getting into the sport. Because of the age of my eldest I jumped in a little deeper than you may - straight into Rotax Minimax. We had our first practice at Rye House about a month ago, but it was an extremely busy Sunday and the boys were forced to go out with juniors (rather than cadets). They were SOOO much slower than everyone else and they were spinning so often it was dangerous. See my previous post "Dissapointing Start to Karting" for the consequences. You will also see from the responses to that post that the vast majority of people are only too willing to help and offer advice. For my 2p worth, once you have your kart and accessories (I hope you have deep pockets) I would recommend getting to a track in the week, when it's nice and quiet and your son can get some seat time and get his confidence up. I'm planning on taking the day off this Thursday and doing exactly that. You are welcome to meet me over there! I bought my kart from the shop at Rye House. Matt was very helpful and had a number of 2nd hand karts at very good prices. Good luck. Paul
