As a new karting dad I was "surprised" by the amount of times the ambulance was out at Rye last weekend. Surprise turned to horror when a cadet flipped and smacked into the tyre wall on the last corner before the main staight during the final. Luckily the little lad was ok in the end. I know karting is dangerous, I am not daft, but seeing a mother screaming and being held back by the side of the track because her child (in minimax) had been thrown from his kart was not my idea of fun. The cadet incident was terrible to see. I suppose I should be pleased that all the safety equipment and designs worked and he was fine. But I am knew to this - and I walked away wondering what the hell I had put my nine-year-old into. It was an uncomfortable feeling and I hope the work to make this sport more safe never ceases.
