Sounds like you have made a good decision, but it might be worth hanging onto the lightning for the time being if you can afford to, or haven't already sold it....
Confidence is crucial with these young drivers. Doing a few sessions with a team will help both you and him. I have found that there is so much to learn and we both learn something new every time out.
If you can, get some one to one coaching, with the instructor driving on the track at the same time. My lad did one hour with Tom at Rednal recently, with Tom making him drive about 1 foot off his rear bumper to show him that the kart has enormous amounts of grip in the dry and that he could go pretty much flat out through the chicane. My lad said that to start with it scared him half to death, but after a few goes he relaxed into it and thought it was great. He now uses this confidence to drive faster through other corners as well keeping his revs higher, having learned to trust the kart more.
