My travel is in a motorhome so I have no hotel costs. No costs for food as we would have to eat if we were not karting. No allowance for accidental damage to kart, helmet, race suit or buying new kit as the driver grows. I have seen a driver bend a chassis beyond immediate repair and the dad have to buy a new/used chassis to carry on with the weekend. So, all in all to do a fair amount of club racing plus Stars and S1 for a dad/kid team excluding equipment such as awning, generator, compressor and so on then about 9k would be a real minimum. Join a team and have a regular mechanic and you can double, treble, quadruple this figure. Even 9k is a lot of money especially as the sport is not tax deductible for most people so that makes it about 12k of earned income. Any kid who competes in Stars and S1 should consider themselves very lucky. Yes, 20k per year is a bit stupid but I heard a lovely story last year - Parent gets out mobile phone at a club meeting and says to engine builder "I spent 20k with you this MONTH on engines - Why has someone just passed my kid on the straight?" One of my daughter-in-laws is a nurse and sometimes works on a private yacht owned by a middle eastern billionaire. The cost to charter it and the supporting fleet (includes a sea plane, dive boat etc) is about 600k per week but it is not chartered very often as the guy likes it to be available just in case he fancies a cruise - how the other half live!!
