DavidMC has mentioned one of the problems with gearing to a max revs.
You have no idea when the max revs occurred or why.
This was demonstrated to me recently by someone who had set up the kart for max power and 'dropped' 1000 rpm in the process, even though the laptimes remained the same. He was convinced that there was room for improvement.
Someone then advised him to move his line on the straight about 3 feet to one side. He did so and instantly found his 1000 revs.
The secret? Just off line there is a yump in the track which lifts the rear axle off the track momentarily. The kart spins up that 1000 revs. You dont go any faster, but it places the revcounter nicely on max.
The other secret? if you use the yump as a marker, and brake heavily just there, it's about right for the corner. Getting the corner right can save you 0.25 seconds a lap. (Of course, you don't have to go over the yump to use it as a marker. It's even faster if you just use it as a visual marker and stay on line....but no-one's told him yet)
