I was running in my 100cc rotary valve engine at whilton mill on wednesday and after about 10 laps the engine got very loud (like the exhaust has come loose)and then stopped.
On inspection there were small flecks of metal on top of the piston and in the exhaust port. The piston and barrel are fine (both still look new) although the barrel felt dry as if there was no / not enough oil in the fuel. The con rod has gone a nasty pink colour and the crank has that blueing colour metal gets when very hot. The teflon crank stuffer has also started to melt / burn.
I'm assuming that this is a bottom end or main bearing failure due to lack of oil but any comments / help welcome as i'm puzzled how then engine got so hot yet didn't seize completely.
Also what is the rebuild required - i'm assuming after such a high heat cycle that the con rod, maind and big end bearings and seals are dead but will the crank be ok, once a new teflon stuffer is fitted?
