There are many answers to that question.
1) Our experience is that they deteriorated after the FIRST use, even if that was the three-lap-shake-down (to 'register' the circuit's timing system)! 2) It depends on the TRACK surface. Kimbolton used to need a NEW set for EVERY meeting.... Rye House seemed to be 'happy if you had used them, perhaps, TWICE before you could measure the difference 3) The temperaturte that you GOT the tyres to... If it was a cold weekend, the tyres didn't get to the same temps as on a Sunny August day. They seemed to go off earlier in hot weather than cold.
However, the differnces could be MINOR! If you can repeat the SAME lap time, getting close to lap-record times on EVERY lap... then a new set is CRITICALLY important. But... if you are a Novice or even a 'racer' in his first YEAR... you are UNLIKELY to be able to USE the advantages of a new-set so it is MUCH less important for 'beginners'! As a novice, by the time you have adjusted for driving a new set of tyres... they'll be deteriorating.....
