I live in the Channel Islands and my lad is currently racing in Minimax . We travel over to the UK once a month and obviously that is a huge part of our budget gone before we even get on the track. I don't think the money being spent in Rotax is any different to that spent in other classes with the exception maybe of tyres. I know of cadet fathers happily paying 2500 for engines to compete in club championships and 1 reputedly spent 5000 on a "special" engine. I think it is perhaps easier if you are racing in the adult classes because you realise that people do have better equipment , are better drivers. It is much harder explaining to a youngster why little Johnny has driven past him like he is standing still with supposedly equal equipment. The best part for us is having a good weekend's sport and if we beat any of the top lad's that's a bonus.
