all through my Karting involvement which has come and gone , TKM has always been the cheaper alternative , Motorsport and the people involved it it will always look sideways at the cheap alternative, as its always been a moneyed environment and will never change.
the great, will always look down from there BARC/BRSCC hospitality suite at the guys in the 750mc beer tent .
So what it comes down to , and this is the perception of any product whether it is actually good or not is marketing , nothing else .
just a few other points rotax had a fair few rivals who were equally strong in the 100cc days and didn't have it all their own way.
And go anywhere into one make sealed engines, in any form of motorsport ,and you'll see silly money being spent on that "top" engine. you will never make all things equal .
the way some series have adopted in cars is a maximum power output , in some cases going further a max power to weight output thats regularly checked with a rolling road , that levels the playing field but like being on the bottom weight limit in karts ,alot of effort goes into being just powerful enough without to much .
motorsport is an engineering driven sport , and the nature of the beast says a good engineer will always find a solution to a problem , some people call that cheating , others call it good engineering development and thus progress, but that will always take money.
