Hi,
I used to race 100cc Karts 10 years ago and have recently been getting interested in racing again.
I was under the impression that Rotax Max engines were lower maintainance and more reliable than the old 100cc lumps. But chatting to some drivers at a recent race meeting they did not seem to think so.
They claimed that it was expensive to get an engine to be competative, which i thought was largely eliminated by engine sealing. they also claimed that an engine rebuild was necesary every 5 or 6 races, which is prety much the same as I used to run my 100cc engines as I was on a tight budget.
Could somebody let me know the reality of running a rotax max on a budget. How many race weekends can you go between rebuilds, and what are the consequences of leaving it longer between rebuilds (failures or just drop in performance?). How many engines do you need?, I used to have 2 backup engines for my race engine in 100cc racing.
Do you still have the "Fun" of constantly tweeking the fuel/air mixture and running it on the hairy edge of seizing to get the max power from the engine?
Also how long do a set of tyres stay reasonably useable for rotax max racing?
Any help is much appreciated.
Cheers.
