The Motoplat is equally as good as the PVL but the 'rules' are different for each.
The engine is 'times' by reference to the height of the piston 'ebfore top dead centre. There is a line on nthe MotoPlat Rotor (the bits which rotates) which aligns with a coresponding line on the MotoPlat 'Stator' (the bit that doesn't rotate). Tes shouldf algn when the piston is a certain ndistance from top-dead-centre. To time a motor with this system needs a Dial Timing Indicator (DTI) and a steel ruler to sheck the lines align. However, if you are new, then you'd do best just to take it to any tuner (or knowledgable oldie) who will do it for you for pennies (or they SHOULD do!).
You have assumed the misfire was ignition, my first guess would be too much fuel.
