Ok.... get carriers that have a lip on BOTH sides!
Sliding hammers are, effectively an 'axle' shaped piece of metal with a sliding collar of metal. That is attached to a set of bolts which you attach to something stuck. You them slide the collar along the length of the axle and, when it reaches the end of the bolts, it releases the stuck object.... basically, a hammer used for pulling rather than pushing!
It's pretty well over-kill but a good tool if you have it. The only problem is that it exterts pressure on areas which are already holed. I'd still prefer the wooden drift applied to the very 'root' of the carrier. Oh.... and use some HEAT! It a magical stuff, heat!
If it's a faulty or a wrongly made axle or a badly machines carrier.... there really is NO contest. Replace BOTH and forget this problem ever occurred. Properly made and matching sprocket/axles do NOT have this problem unles they corrode.

WD40 is a light oil with SOME openetrating powers. PlusGas is a PROPER penetrating fluid with very little oiling function..... but it dos the job of penetrating where WD40 won't. So.... use th real thiung when you NEED the function of the real thing. Put simply, using WD40 for penetrating is like using a chisel as a screw-driver, it is NOT the right tool for the job...... even though it CAN be used in an emergency.
