Well it all depends on how much you race I guess.
Our budget will be �2000 - �2500.
We won't be practicing or racing as much as with the pro kart but when we do race it will be twice as much fun.
If you just do the Darley Moor championship I think it would be about �80 - �100 race entry. You would then need about one rebuild a year �500ish. (I currently spend around �350 - �400 a year with RPM havingmy engines serviced) 4 pistons at �60 each.
I am going to be buying almost new tyres from the 250cc rich boys that change tyres after one race. Ok won't be at the front this year but will be competetive. This year is all about learning 2 stroke engines and racing so won't be breaking the bank!
Because its long circuit you don't do anywhere near the practice that you do in prokarting so costs there are saved.
Also, racing is far safer with less collisions etc so repair bills will be much lower. in our last prokart race we were taken out by another kart and the chassis got written off costing over �400 for a new chassis and axle and a weekend rebuilding. This is rare in long circuit 125s.
If you race at the bigger tracks - Silverstone etc then yes the costs are higher (ie around �200 - �250 but these will be life experinces and we won't be doing those as much as Darley.
The advantage of 125cc Open Long Circuit karts is all you need to do is take off the long circuit bodywork and you have a short circuit kart. You can then race at the smaller normal 2 stroke tracks in 125 open class (or with spare ICC 125 parts in the ICC class). Here the costs are much lower - normal 2 stroke karting costs.
Thats what we like about the superkarts, the versatility. You can choose the cheaper option of just short circiuts, a mixture short and the occaissional thrill of long circuit or all long circuit.
My aim is to spend roughly the same as prokarting. I track every expense over he last few years and averaged �2500 per year - I expect to spend similar this year as we learn and then a little more next year, depending on the mixture of long & short
