They usually start cracking on the sporcket side where the unused keyway is situated.
It starts across the middle of the holes and won't usually snap if the crack starts during a race.
The crack takes a time to develop.
Spraying the axle with WD40 can help show up any indication of a crack beginning as it creeps into the crack and attracts dirt along the crack line, so you should be able to catch it before the catastophic wheel losing finale trick.
I seen a few break off on the left hand side but they had multiple grub scew indentations
We had on start to crack on both keyway holes at the last Whilton meeting so we gave the axle to John the scrut for an example.
The new axles don't have the unused keyway so they should be ok.
