It's really down to luck whether the engine is good 'out of the box' or not. If you decide to buy a new motor, run it 'out of the box' & see how it performs over the season. Look for a builder after your seasons racing listening to people that you can trust in the paddock. You will probably be advised of a few builders. My advice is speak to each builder & try to work out which one you can trust. I use George Robinson & have found him extremely decent to deal with & reasonably easy to pay being a Scot !!! Contact him on 01329 829 200 If you are coming back into the sport, another option is to look for a retirement sale that is being sold with a motor of known pedigree.
In your first season back, you will probably gain more from your driving than a really good motor. By the way, I don't do S1 & George still builds a good motor for me.
