Just look over the channel to France to see the future. Karting is dead except for the super rich. The rule changes that bought this about are very similar to the changes that have been made and continue to made by the MSA. Super cadet, helmet regs and increases in weight are the worst offenders in my view.
As for qualifying, I totally disagree, going over to timed qualifying only would be the final nail in the coffin. The cheque book brigade who have loads of practice time will set the fastest times and start at the front and there they will stay all weekend. While better drivers with slower engines are dropped off from lap 1 on. Been there got the T-shirt, it's the worst aspect of karting in France. Mixed grid qualy is what makes British racing the best in Europe!
