Thanks, yes as the ring is L shaped, which I'd forgotten, I can understand the possibilty of force acting on the vertical part of the ring pressing the ring against the cylinder.
I suspect the measurement of the real forces acting on a piston ring and how it behaves under normal operating conditions is just a tad difficult though (virtually impossible)
Please note, the advice I provided is that given by my engine builder who enjoyed considerable success for many years in TKM
That there is more than one viewpoint on running-in should not be come as a big surprise. Better to have a richness of viewpoints, theories and debate, rather than the usual "This is wot I do and it works for me so it you do something else you must be an idiot" viewpoint which is prevalent on these threads.
