This is a very interesting thread, there have been a lot of valid points, but has anyone actually written to the MSA officially about any of this, even if its the forum/website moderator, someone with a bit of clout, what about a quick poll for the MSA and against, who would race non MSA. I have been MSA registered for many years now (i am 42) and race karts at my local track, grids are very very small, practice day is very very busy. From scratch joining the MSA and obtaining the licence is a costly experience, plus all the rules and regs of a max kart, correct airbox, tyres, clutch etc, so some of the cost is fabricated by Rotax.
Years ago, you just got a 100cc kart and raced, tyres were open, just a weight limit to worry about, i was only 15 at the time, no money to speak of and a Dad who supported me with very limited funds, and we raced once a month.
Then once rules started to change, noise, one make tyres, and engine spec (new air cooled Rotax) is where the money started to become a big factor, now here we are today, when compared to DD 100cc karts of 80s and 90s, complicated restricted karts, which IMHO cost more to run, and cost loads more to be competitive.
I am a married man, with a couple of step kids, mortgage, and other financial comittments, but more disposable income than when i raced when i was 15 to 21, and racing at the same track!
It's not all about the MSA, but the whole karting ferternity at club level, it isnt a cheap motorsport, the days of yeste year are long gone, even the new TKM kart class can't revive it.
i love racing karts, and enjoy it more now than ever, but i wish i had more competition, some of the rules need to be relaxed, MSA take note, Rotax, take note, stupid airboxes, which have "rotax" stamped is not a reason to change, there are others which escape me at present...
god i wish i had the answer, but if it isn't fixed by now....will it ever
