If you're only looking to do test days, Super Pro Karts are bullet proof. 620cc Honda engines (some have 570cc Briggs and Stratton), just change the oil every 20 or so hours. They run proper 428 chains too. They turn up on a certain internet auction site from time to time and are generally very cheap for what you get.
My Briggs and Stratton is comparable with an Easy Kart around Teesside so they're quick too. A similar skilled driver in a snr Rotax would be about a second a lap quicker around the same track.
Obviously if you're looking to race in the future, the standard advice is to buy what is raced on the biggest grids at the circuits near to you. I also have a Pro Kart and Snr Max and although very different in terms of performance, once in a race with the same class it really doesn't matter as everyone else is on similar machinery so the racing is close and enjoyable.
