I asked the same question when we were looking to do the arks test and people advised us to watch the DVD, and watch it some more until it all sinks in.
I guess it all depends on the examiner but when we did our he looked at my lad on track and said he was fine (so if your lad has put in some seat time he should be ok if he is running near the pack).
As for the written/multiple choice our examiner was not there to fail my lad, he was there to make sure he was safe and knew what he needed to.
I could sit with him whilst they did the test but could not help or guide. The examiner read the question verbatim then explained it if my lad was unsure of the terminology (as my lad was only just 8). If your examiner is reasonable like ours was and your lad knows what they run through on the DVD, knows his flags and knows the basics of track safety it's a walk in the park.
