It certainly is �just� a hobby. Anyone who thinks it�s more is deluded in my view. Although I suspect Alan didn't mean it that way.
While I sort of understand your reasoning behind favouring X30 over Rotax, Alan (neither engine holds the least bit appeal for me), the prospect of one near-monopoly being replaced by another near-monopoly is surely not a good one generally. Worse still � and as discussed elsewhere � the MSA has seen fit to protect the (considerably higher) prices charged by the UK distributor, blocking any benefit to the consumer of the European Single Market. Outrageous, but true as you know.
Combined with the farce of the British Kart Championship (or whatever it�s called and is) handed to yet another single supplier instead of the multi-make it was, these look like very unhealthy developments to me.
As for Rotax, yes, huge mistakes made, but on the upside these now more affordable engines will be much appreciated in IKR, where the reliability and warranty presumably matter more to the casual racers on smaller budgets.
