I'm no expert on the engines by any means, but it seems to me that although they seem to need more frequent attention, because they aren't sealed, people can do bits themselves. As a team, we do a lot of it in-house, including the carbs.
We went X30 before Evo was even announced.
Yes, there are big motors out there, and there is an element of luck, but our two motors were straight off the shelf and very much on the pace from the word go, without spending anything like the money I know Rotax front-runners have paid.
As yet, I haven't heard of any X30 engines changing hands for the kinds of sums you see in cadet or Rotax but they will in time.
I'm sure X30 will go in a similar direction as Rotax eventually, but for now, X30 seems to suit the dad n lad as well as the teams, hence the huge grids.
