I feel I will have disappointed Coach Calhoon if I don't comment. I must admit I missed this post.
drewy1952, go for Rotax if you can. You'll get the warranty and now that they've taken away all of the skill relating to ancilliary tuning, it's as easy as going corporate karting if you want an easy life.
You'll get competitive racing if you can find a track with a healthy grid.
You have to put up with pot luck with the barrels but you may find a stonker instead of a stinker.
Like anything, you can end up with a Friday night Rotax rebuild that is worse than before but if you consider that engine rebuilders succeed or fail on their recommendations, it's unlikely they will deliberately build a dog.
With the X30, it was a good class to begin with but like everything in karting, they managed to spoil the experience. I wouldn't recommend it unless you want the extra driving experience that it gives.
That however will come at a cost. We never got to 25 hours with our Rotax's, more like 4/5 hours for a top end.
We grenaded more Rotax's than X30's but then we did Rotax for longer so the jury's out on that still.
Our X30's however have just been rebuilt after in excess of 25 hours. We're trying a relatively new kid on the block for the work and I'll let you know if they're any good.
To conclude, take the Rotax route if you can as there isn't much else they can do now to sterilise it, so barring the barrels, it's level.
