I too have just got a DD for the first time and struggled for the first few starts. None of my friends were fit enough / were willing to risk their backs with having to lift the kart with me in it. So now i run alongside and jump in, as described in the previous posts. Much easier if you ask me. Still need to get the hang of starting it on my own from cold though.
One question to you guys though, is it still possible to start a TKM on your own in the wet? I tried and couldn't get enough downward pressure on the tyres to make them grip, so the engine wouldn't turn over.
Also, people say to start them from hot on the dummy grid for a race. What is the best way to start them before a race? I hear the seatbelt round the rear wheel trick is dangerous.
Cheers,
Pete
