NJB, i am only to aware that not just anybody can rebuild an engine correctly. I once had someone ask me how come my engine was so good? the answer was simple, i had built the engine to the exact spec that the factory yamaha people had told me it should be, i had spent many, many hours on the dyno perfecting the set up, you know diferent squish and head volumes etc.diferant ignition curves which o know isnt an option on a max.(and how did it rile me when someone would pop their head in the awning and ask how they should set theirs up,i hadnt been up till well after midnight on the dyno too freely give that king of imformation away)
And do you know what the clown then said to me?
Maybe its because we thought we could make it go better with honda pistons and head shape, bearing in mind this was a yamaha.Say no more about some folks ability to balls up what should be a simple if not long and tedious job of setting a 2 stroke motor up to the spec its intended!!
Which brings me back to the original post, i still believe that a good engine builder can put together a good engine no matter what year the cylinder, yes maybe a slight performance advantage but not the wide diferance in performance that some would like you to believe.
And john you will never see me just crack a set of main bearings in with a lump hammer, but again i know just the sort of person you mean. the same man i mentioned above.
Guess we will just have to wait and see how the 09 cylinders will perform, but i believe if rotax have done their job to look after the class i dont think we should see any big diferance on the stop watch. I hope not anyway!!!
