I've got to agree with Dubaikarter here. To dismiss fitness as 'NOT important' belittles the sport and misguides young drivers and newcomers and is irresponsible for that reason alone.
If your aim is merely to 'keep up' at club meetings then do please stuff your face with pies and smoke / drink yourself to an early grave.
If you are serious about doing well and maximising your ability then do some training. You do have to be strong both physically and mentally. It's true, a heat is pretty short.... and even a final. But attend a 3 day event test Fri, Sat and race on Sunday and by the end of the weekend it starts to take its toll. Of course, you will maximise your performance if you prepare yourself vs not preparing yourself.
No doubt this will invoke some form of response. So if you're new to the sport or a young driver wanting to do well, ask yourself this question. Are ALL the drivers who post on this forum represenative of good drivers? Answer: Some are, some aren't - be careful what you believe.
