The main bearing thing has intrigued me. Tal-ko were surprised that I needed mains for my first rebuild, and said it was unusual on a TAG engine. I think I've got about 7 hours on it since (it has been rebuilt in that time), and it will definitely want mains after the next meeting. In fact when I last placed an order I got myself up to the "free carriage" minimum with a pair of mains and 2 sets of oil seals, as I knew I was going to need them.
I take it I'm not the only person to find that TAG engines get through main bearings.
I think the mode of failure is linked to corrosion rather than just wear, even though I'm pretty careful to dry it all out after a wet session. I've wondered if water ingress through the main seals might be a factor.
Like dean says, the TAG engine is different in terms of bearings and seals. Thanks for the advice on checking for leaks - I'm going to keep a close eye on this.
