Rissy is a great track for cadet novices to learn. The key to being fast is carrying corner speed and that is often the biggest challenge for the new starters.
My advice would be go DOWN on the gearing maybe to 85 to try and force him to get used to getting his foot down through the corners. You need to ignore his lap times for the first 2 or 3 visits but concentrate on getting on the right bit of track as it is very wide and carrying plenty of corner speed. After two or three visits go up to an 88 and see if his times are around low 51 seconds if not persist with the low gearing until he has cracked the corner speed thing.
If he cracks carrying his corner speed at Rissy he will instantly go better elsewhere because it will help him with carrying that speed on other tracks. It does work but you have to be patent and not worry about trying to match the other novices times, watch his lines and corner speed and when they are similar to the main pack then try the bigger sprocket and you will know if he has got the basics cracked!!
