Copy of Talko's official position on the Junior 2nd ring: "TKM BT82 Piston Rings
Ever since the introduction of the 115cc Extreme engine we have had a situation where those 115cc engines use a single top ring piston while the 100cc Junior engine still uses two rings.
We have now made the decision to simplify this situation for the benefit of drivers and Scrutineers. Our testing has shown no quantifiable difference in performance between one or two piston rings and no increase in piston and/or cylinder wear.
So as detailed in the 2015 official TKM regulations and engine fiche and piston ring clarification issued today, with immediate effect it is permitted to remove the bottom piston ring on the Junior 100cc engine if desired.
Replacement 100cc Junior pistons supplied from Tal-Ko and those fitted in new engines will still have two rings fitted. The removal of the lower ring is down to driver or engine builder choice.
At some point in the future when stocks of the twin ring 100cc pistons are exhausted we will switch to the supply and fitting to new Junior engines of simpler single ring pistons. Competitors are reminded of the need to ensure that the piston ring remains at all times to have free movement as detailed in the regulations."
