I love to play with my engines and still do quite a bit of DIY prep on my test engines and what I have learned is invaluable.
Yes my race engines are carefully assembled and maintained by RPM (save for oil, carb cleaning, clutch and valve springs which i still do before every race) but at the track on race day RPM ain't there most of the time and we do occasionally have an engine problem. Indeed last Sunday one of our grid at WL had an issue before the first heat and guess who what the problem was immediately? - if all I had ever done was send the motors away I would have been as goosed as the next man.
If I was to start over again i think I would do the same again. I spent the first year learning to drive and set up a crap chassis as well as maintaining my engines as best I could myself. In fact if I was to change I would start with a good 7Kart from day one and i bet I would have progressed quicker than buying tuned engines. Only when I got futher up the field did engines start to become a feature and RPM have provided an awesome service over the years and without doubt it does save prep time, however, parts of me miss playing and if I had all the test equipment I would probably still do more.
