I would agree with Trev.
We picked up a second hand Alfano Pro off ebay for abour �120 when we started karting and it has been invaluabe.
The main two uses are that it measures your RPM and also that it records your lap times, which can also be downloaded to your PC for data analysis. Being able to see your lap times as you race is hugely motivating as you not only want to get infront of the guy ahead, but you want to do that by improving your lap times, which you can measure as you race.
There is other data recorded, such as a time elapsed, number of laps, total engine running time and a few other bits and bobs.
