The essence here is that the rules have to reflect the tolerences in the standard engines, while catching the cheats who go beyond this. The Con Rod is the most sensitive issue here, because not only do they vary a lot as standard they can also be remanufactured using the oversize rod.
IMO the rules makers in the UK have their fingers on this pulse. Unlike in France, where I spent a year in constant fear of disqualification because the rule book was simply wrong. For example: Standard flywheels that vary in weight by as much as 100g, but the tolerence in the rules was only +/- 25g. In all I indentified and informed the FFSA of 18 factural errors in the regs. Yet they remained unmodified for 3 years.
Just one result of this was the poleman from the French championship final being removed from the grid, despite the fact he was running a standard unmodified Honda part.
