I wouldn't argue with you that RPM probably produce the fastest engines. But IMO that is the problem, it has reached a point where only those with expensive SP engines can compete and only those effectively given 'factory' engines can win.
I'm speaking from experience, because I do in France with the GX120 what RPM do in the UK with the GX160. My engines win practically everything that's worth winning, much to the chagrin of the French Federation who still protest that all engines out the box are equal. The UT1 version even has different ignition retardation, 20 rather than 25 degress along with the different piston & rings, yet they still state that the engines are indentical to the earlier version, barking mad.
As for the old chestnut of more time in the set-up, I wish. Of course there is time in the set-up, but beyond a certain level of driver feedback and experience, sadly it's become less than the difference in engines.
