There are a couple of photos at TDC that show the relative position of the magnet and the leading edge of the coil. All it takes to check is the removal of the side cover. If the visual check suggests that the ignition has been advanced the flywheel will need to be removed to confirm the correct, non-stepped key-way has been used. No pullers required - just a suitable sized socket and a liberal tap with a hammer to break the taper.
The cam gear on the crank determines the timing of the opening and closing of the valves. This can be shifted to optimised power delivery. In the old days this used to be fixed but it is a press fit and was rarely in the same place twice.
